Ex-care home boss John Allen labelled ‘one of Britain’s most prolific paedophiles’ as he’s jailed for life
The serial abuser, 73, could now die in jail after being found guilty of decades of depraved attacks on children in his care homes
Serial abuser John Allen was today jailed for life for three decades of depraved sex attacks on children in his care homes.
The 73-year-old could now die in jail for multiple attacks on 19 youngsters as a judge ordered him to serve a minimum of 11 years behind bars, taking him to the age of 84.
The sex monster could remain in prison beyond 2025 if parole bosses think he has failed to renounce his perverted and deeply-ingrained paedophilia.
Allen remained emotionless in the dock at Mold Crown Court as he was jailed, with angry shouts of ‘monster’ and ‘ba***rd’ from the public gallery, Justice Openshaw told him: “The procession of sad and broken men, aged beyond their years, is a poignant reminder of the damage done by this sort of offending.
“I hope their experience encourages other to come forward.
“There was a regime of violence and intimidation within the homes.”
“Victims, some of whom described themselves as survivors, accepted the abuse as part of the routine of being “a Bryn Alyn boy”.
“Complaints had been dismissed as being incredible – the word of young disadvantaged boys in care against the seemingly successful and powerful John Allen.”
In a further shocking snub to his victims, Allen even bleated his innocence from the dock as he was jailed.
His barrister John McDermott, QC said: “All I am instructed to say is that he maintains his innocence of all charges.”
Experts from the NSPCC have ranked the now-pensioner as high on the list of the country’s most heinous known predators in recent times.
Allen was convicted of 33 offences of sexual abuse against children, 18 boys and one girl, between the 1960s and the 1990s, with charges including buggery, attempted buggery, indecent assault and indecency with a child.
Millionaire Allen targeted different youngsters at three care centres in his rapidly-growing 11-home portfolio.
Appointing himself in charge of night-time duties, Allen cynically groomed his terrified favourites before sexually abusing them in bed.
In one harrowing episode, boys lined up outside his study and waited to be abused by Allen, sessions which lasted ten minutes each.
Desperate lads often ran away, but when they reported him, police officers waved away their stories before their abuser himself arrived to pick them up at cop stations.
One victim, now 57, was taken to Bryn Alyn home in Wrexham, north Wales, from the age of 11 until 15, from 1968 to 1973, becoming one of Allen’s favourites.
He recalled being raped by Allen during a night-time hide-and-seek game on Moel Famau mountain, when the whisky-stinking predator forced him to the ground.
Allen’s control was so complete that many confused boys regarded him as ‘God’ and actually admitted they admired him, despite being his victims.
One boy was even abused at Allen’s parents home in Shropshire as the care boss’ own mum and dad, along with his wife Norma, were upstairs in bed.
Youngsters regularly heard screams of other boys being abused, and would pray they would ‘not get it’ as they cowered under their bed sheets.
Boys spoke of Allen ‘smashing their heads in’, and one youngster watched Allen assault a child in front of a social worker.
In 1974, a boy crushed both his legs and broke his wrists after falling off a rope swing, but despite being unable to walk he was dumped in an empty room, and ‘forced to lie on his stomach for weeks and weeks’, never once being taken for treatment.
Allen would tell boys, ‘I fancy you, I think you’re gorgeous,’ and was nicknamed after the cartoon character Hong Kong Phooey because he was overweight.
One victim told cops: “John Allen’s sexual abuse at Bryn Alyn was systematic and happened at least once a fortnight.
“John Allen smelt of alcohol and cigars. He ruled with an iron fist. That was the reason no-one told. Both staff and boys were scared stiff of him.
“In reality, the only person we could have told was John Allen and he was the one noncing.”
Another boy was led to the care home toilets, held down on a stool, and raped by Allen, his head landing in the stale urine.
His face was so badly bruised from the ordeal that the 10-year-old was taken to hospital and had to eat through a straw for a fortnight.
Before his arrest, a gaunt Allen was living a lonely life in Ipswich, Suffolk, in a pokey flat with no friends as he tried to stay clear of vigilante attacks following his six year jailing around 20 years ago.

Detective Superintendent Ian Mulcahey said: “Allen had a position of trust and power and he abused it, controlling and manipulating vulnerable children.
“You have to give credit to the victims. We will never know fully the impact has had on them. Some people say they live with it every day.
“Allen is a predatory paedophile.”
Ed Beltrami, chief crown prosecutor for Wales, said: “I hope the victims regard the convictions as an important milestone in their effort to come to terms with what happened to them.”
