A Harley Street therapist raped a child at a gym as the boy waited for a lift home from his mother, a court was told.

Nicholas Gully, 47, a leading psychotherapist, allegedly followed the 14-year-old boy into public toilets and then raped him in a cubicle.

Hove Crown Court heard the child was too scared to cry out and fight back during the 10 minute assault.

Afterwards the boy went home with his mother before confiding in his friends and his aunt and calling police.

Yesterday Gully, a Harley Street psychotherapist, went on trial charged with rape and two counts of sexual assault at the King Alfred Leisure Centre in Hove, East Sussex.

Gully, from Rottingdean in Brighton, heads the Brunswick Clinic and works in Harley Street, London.

According to his website, the married father-of-two has worked in psychotherapy for more than 27 years and is a specialist in sex and love addiction.

He is well known across the profession and practises in the UK and abroad and has held senior positions in some of the leading addiction treatment centres in the country, including the Priory Hospital in London.

Hove Crown Court was told the teenage boy had gone to the gym at the King Alfred Centre in Hove on his own at around midday on Sunday January 29 this year.

He had arranged to get a lift home from his mother afterwards and around an hour and a half later called her from the reception area on his mobile and asked to be picked up.

But as he was sitting on a chair waiting for her to arrive he allegedly spotted Gully on his phone nearby. He told police Gully was repeatedly attempting to make eye contact with him and he overheard him say there was a ‘sexy boy’ nearby.

Feeling ‘uncomfortable and worried’, he went into the public toilets in the reception area to get away from the man.

In a video recorded interview played to the jury, the boy told police he had never met his alleged attacker or spoken to him before the assault.

He said: ‘A man came and he was in front of me talking on the phone. He said something about a boy being near him and he was sexy.

‘He kept on trying to make eye contact with me and then I went into the toilet. I felt a bit uncomfortable.

‘I went to the urinal, he had already walked in by this point. There was another man drying his hands. He moved next to me and he reached down and touched my penis.

‘I walked into the middle cubicle and I heard him go into the one next to me. After about 20 seconds, I opened the door and looked around.

‘He opened his door and casually walked into mine. He closed the door behind him and took his trousers down and asked me to take my trousers down.

‘I was paralysed. I was scared he might have a weapon. He was quite rough. I pushed him away a little bit but he wasn’t really phased by that. It felt horrible. I felt really disgusting.’

When his mother arrived to pick him up the boy left the leisure centre, later telling police: ‘I was worried the person he was on the phone to might be waiting outside and they might try to put me in a car or something.’

Opening the case prosecutor Amy Packham said: ‘This was abuse. The incident did not take place at night it took place in broad daylight. The boy had been to the gym and was waiting for his mum to pick him up.’

Although he was not seriously injured, the boy was left extremely upset and confused by the attack.

Gully was later arrested and questioned by police over the rape, before being charged with one count of rape and two counts of assault by touching.

He denies all charges. The case continues.
