Depraved paedophiles are downloading a vile 170-page “manual” on how to groom and abuse children, a disgusted judge revealed.
Judge Peter Kelson said the “truly horrific document” acted as a step-by-step guide for sex attackers as he jailed a pervert for possessing it.
John Whatley, 33, was snared when police raided his home and found more than 3,600 vile images and videos of children stored on his computers.
Also found among the stash was a “paedophile manual” – which ran to 170 pages, Sheffield Crown Court heard.
Judge Kelson told the court the sick dossier detailed methods for everything from grooming to abusing a child.
The judge said: “That is a truly horrific document and it is almost impossible to conceive how someone could compile such a document, and then upload it to the internet.”
Whatley told cops he downloaded the illegal material because he was a child abuse victim who wanted to understand the mindset ofabusers.
Police seized four computer devices from which they found 1,113 accessible indecent images of children as young as two that were placed in Category A -the most serious of its kind.
The court heard officers found a further 1,300 such images that were inaccessible. Also discovered were more than 1,200 pictures in a less serious category.
Prosecutor Neil Coxon said that Whatley, of Wath-upon-Dearne, admitted downloading the images in police interview.
“He gave the explanation that he had been abused when he was a child and that he was seeking to understand the mindset of abusers using research, and that explained the manual which ran to 170 pages,” the prosecutor added.
Whatley admitted making indecent images of a child, possession of extreme pornographic images, possession of a paedophile manual and the possession of prohibited images of children.
John Hillis, mitigating, said: “One of the reasons in mitigation for him possessing the manual is that he wanted to protect his niece and nephew, who live over the road from him, from what had happened to him when he was achild.”
“His partner was distraught, and that relationship has ended. His family have completely disowned him.”
Jailing Whatley for 12 months, Judge Kelson said: “Yours is a much more serious case than many. The images of children are great in number, and are extremely serious.”
Whatley was also made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order.
