A BBC presenter told an indecent assault jury that upskirt videos are ‘nothing out of the ordinary if you’ve got a husband who appreciates you’.

Julie Wadsworth, 60, and her husband Tony, 69, are on trial at Warwick Crown Court and deny a number of charges of indecent assault.

The Crown’s barrister then asked about whether she had posed for a video filmed by her husband, in which she appeared topless.

Miranda Moore asked: ‘You have a video of your husband shooting a video up your skirt?’

But the former DJ said the video was nothing out of the ordinary ‘if you’ve got a husband who appreciates you’.

Asked about the charity calendar, Mrs Wadsworth said ‘it was a Children in Need calendar called Naughty But Nice’, sold to listeners to raise donations.

Mrs Moore asked: ‘You were somebody who was very happy to do a Calendar-Girl style calendar, and weren’t body conscious at all as long as it passed the standards of the BBC?’

The defendant replied: ‘It was no different to that (Calendar Girls), it was not salacious at all.’

Mr Wadsworth, 69, gave emotional evidence at the couple’s trial yesterday, admitting he found it ‘erotic’ to watch his wife pleasure a teenager who saw them petting in woodland.

He insisted he let it happen to help Julie ‘improve her confidence’ and ’empower her’ as a woman, a court heard today.

Prosecutor Miranda Moore QC put it to him that he found his wife’s interaction with the boy ‘sexually titillating’ and he replied: ‘Correct’.

But, he added: ‘I wouldn’t break the law… she hasn’t had sexual intercourse with anybody. (Our actions) have come back to bite us in the bum.’

Referring to how the couple would use the ‘twang’ sound of suspenders on their radio show, Mrs Moore said of Mrs Wadsworth: ‘She’s a woman who has courted publicity at the twang of a stocking, for years. She was a woman who relished the attention.’

Mr Wadsworth, whose spouse had a boob job to boost her self esteem, also told Warwick Crown Court how he ‘stepped to one side’ before she performed a sex act on a 14-year-old boy he says looked ’16, 17, possibly 18′.

He said it was ‘sexually titillating’ to watch his ‘jealous and possessive wife’ pleasure the young stranger, who his wife claims suddenly emerged from bushes with his ‘hands down his pants’ in the 1990s.

Giving evidence for the first time today Mr Wadsworth said: ‘I looked at Julie, Julie looked at me. I stepped to one side and Julie moved in. He started playing with her breasts’.

He added: ‘It was erotic I cannot deny that – he was clearly highly aroused, he probably couldn’t believe his luck I guess. It was a positive, because she felt empowered as a woman’.

Mr Wadsworth said that they returned to kiss and cuddle in the same Warwickshire woodland around 12 weeks later and three teenagers then appeared and started touching his wife’s bosom, which was ‘exciting for me’, he said.

The Wadsworths, who worked together at BBC Radio WM in Birmingham and BBC Radio Leicester after meeting in 1984, are on trial at Warwick Crown Court accused of encouraging boys to take part in sexual activity in Warwickshire woods between 1992 and 1996.

Both have accepted having sexual encounters with what Mrs Wadsworth described as ‘young men’ in the forest, but deny they were children.

Her husband said today: ‘I would not break the law’.

Giving evidence in his defence on Friday, Mr Wadsworth said there were two separate encounters, involving up to three males each time.

He said:  ‘Yeah, this was all part of it. Julie’s unreasonable possessiveness and jealousy, then as the years went by, I tried my best to bring out the life in her by demonstrating to her I was not a jealous type. That it’s not just me – the world and his wife can see the beautiful woman that she is.’

In his account of the moment an alleged victim was abused the couple were ‘kissing and cuddling’ when they became aware of a young man watching them in the undergrowth.

Ex-BBC star believes being ‘saucy’ was part of couple’s success

The Wadsworths were nicknamed the ‘Richard and Judy of local radio’ and ran ‘saucy’ features including one called ‘Julie’s Christmas Stocking’.

Mrs Wadsworth told the court yesterday: ‘Part of the success of the programme was that we were husband and wife and we would act like that’.

On allegations that she seemed to be happy to pose as a calendar girl despite supposedly being body conscious she said: ‘I was clothed in those pictures, but was appearing to be naked.

‘I still do not particularly like my body. Calendars like that were very popular at the time.

‘It was not salacious or anything like that. I did sometimes wear stockings, yes.

‘But I do not own a pair of white stockings. I hate white stockings.

‘I did own a pair of white stockings, but they were for dress up, in a Jennifer Aniston-type style.

‘Because we were on the late show, we had a lot of truckers who drove through the night listening.

‘We tried to engage them in the programme in whatever way we could.

‘On the show, Tony played a ‘twang’ when they (the trucker listeners) phoned in to the radio station and spoke to me.

‘It became quite a big part of the show.

‘Because of the popularity of the twang, we decided to do a bit of a pin-up picture, as a bit of fun’

Mr Wadsworth said: ‘I turned, looked around and saw this fella and must confess it was something of a shock.

‘I didn’t know what he was going to do. But very shortly after it was clear what he was hoping to do.’

He added: ‘It just happened, he came forward as I stepped to one side.’

The 69-year-old claimed the whole incident had taken place in woodland, well off the beaten track, without a word being exchanged.

He said: ‘After the heat of the moment was over, it was all very embarrassing and awkward. We tidied ourselves up and we all went our separate ways.

‘I discussed with Julie what had happened. She found it exhilarating and exciting.

‘It was a positive experience because I think she felt empowered as a woman’.

Mr Wadsworth – who also worked for BBC Leicester alongside his wife – said the couple then went back to the same woods around three months later.

He told the jury: ‘We were kissing and cuddling again. It was evident there were others around.

‘We stopped what we were doing. I think there were two possibly three of them.

‘It was not very comfortable because I didn’t know of their intentions but they obviously heard that something had happened in the Outwoods and they came down on the chance of coming across us I guess.

‘It was evident from their body language that they expect something.

‘I stepped aside again just to see what would happen.

‘They came forward individually and approached Julie.

‘The first one touched Julie intimately on her breasts.

‘His mates weren’t far behind and they sort of carried on as it were.

‘Person one finished and then person two came forward and the same happened. It was exciting for me.’

Mr Wadsworth said he started to feel uncomfortable because there were too many of the boys – who he believed to be 16, 17, or possibly 18.

He added: ‘I was uneasy about the situation because I am not a big bloke and there were three as I recall and I thought we have got to get out of here, this is ridiculous.

‘I made it clear by saying something like, ‘lads that’s it, let’s go’. It was mixed emotions, I thought the situation was crazy getting out of hand.

‘An end had to be put to it. We both agreed it was ridiculous, foolhardy and stupid and we didn’t go back.’

Mrs Wadsworth has accepted going on to have a sexual relationship with one complainant, after bumping into him some years later, but has repeatedly denied he was under-age.

Her husband has claimed that when he discovered that tryst, he told the man to ‘f**k off’, also rejecting a Facebook friend request from him in 2015.

Speaking about the alleged sexual activity in his home, Mr Wadsworth said: ‘I never joined in with what they were doing and I never watched what they were doing.

‘I raised concern and I told her that he might possibly begin to have feelings for her. That would be a threat to our marriage and future happiness.’

The Wadsworths are accused of meeting the boys in an area known as the Outwoods beside Atherstone Golf Club in Warwickshire.

The offences are said to have occurred in 1992 and between 1995 and 1996. Miss Moore said the defendants were ‘partial to having sexual encounters in the outdoors’ at the time, with the husband acting as Wadsworth’s ‘minder’ while she performed sex acts with the youths.

Wadsworth told the jury that the earlier offences must have involved a different couple because it was ‘not us’.

She admits having sexual encounters in the woods and at home with one of the second group of youths, but says they started when he was 17, not 14 as the prosecution alleges.

Yesterday Mrs Wadsworth  claimed she was body-conscious but posed naked for a ‘Naughty But Nice’ charity calendar.

Julie Wadsworth went naked for Children in Need as Lady Godiva and also posed in white suspenders for trucker fans of the late night radio show she shared with husband Tony Wadsworth, 69.

She said: ‘On the show, Tony played a ‘twang’ when they (the trucker listeners) phoned in to the radio station and spoke to me.

‘I posed for a pin-up style photo with suspenders where if you clicked on a computer image of me you would hear the twang. It was just cheeky really.’

Mrs Wadsworth, 60, who had a boob job to boost her confidence, also revealed her husband had shot an up-skirt video of his wife.

The former DJ said the video was nothing out of the ordinary ‘if you’ve got a husband who appreciates you’.

She is on trial at Warwick Crown Court alongside spouse and former co-presenter Tony Wadsworth, with both accused of encouraging boys to take part in sexual activity in Warwickshire woods between 1992 and 1996.

Mrs Wadsworth, who at the time was living at nearby Knob Hall with her husband, has accepted having sexual encounters with ‘young men’ in the woods but has repeatedly denied they were children.

Miranda Moore QC, prosecuting, asked Mrs Wadsworth: ‘You have given us all the impression that you are so body-conscious, you wouldn’t display yourself in public.’

Giving evidence in her defence today, Mrs Wadsworth claimed she still suffered low body confidence.

But Mrs Moore put it to the defendant that she had ‘courted publicity’.

She asked: ‘You would have photographs taken as what I would describe as saucy poses, wouldn’t you?’

Mrs Wadsworth said she had only had such pictures taken for work purposes and the charity calendar.

The former broadcaster also denied sunbathing topless in public, as some complainants have alleged, adding it was ‘not illegal’ to do so in private.

Complainants have claimed they were approached and propositioned by a knicker-less Mrs Wadsworth, wearing white stockings, near woodland – while Mr Wadsworth would allegedly keep watch.

The couple previously worked for BBC Leicester and Birmingham-based BBC WM.

Mrs Moore asked her: ‘We have heard evidence of you being in the woods without your underwear on, can you remember that?

The 60-year-old replied: ‘No, I never did it.’

Mrs Wadsworth said she hated white stockings, but did own a pair of long white socks worn in ‘Jennifer Aniston-style’ as ‘a bit of fun’ at a Christmas-time family gathering at home.

However, when presented with prosecution evidence she accepted wearing ‘a dress and stockings’ for her and her husband’s Late Show BBC programme, entitled ‘Julie’s Christmas Stocking’.

Mrs Wadsworth was about alleged sexual activity in the woods, including her ‘first encounter’ of ‘mutual masturbation’ with a male who she claimed came across she and her husband, while ‘petting’ in the trees.

She said: ‘We didn’t say no, and when he walked forward we accepted that it was all of the moment, of sexual arousal.

‘We were in a situation, he came forward and it happened.’

Later, Mrs Moore asked her: ‘Is that you problem Mrs Wadsworth – you’re just going to get your jollies however you want?’

She replied: ‘I don’t have a problem.’

Mrs Wadsworth then claimed she was a ‘victim’ of the process, adding: ‘The reason I use the word victim is because I am being victimised for something I did not do.’

Asked about another encounter involving what the prosecution claim was three children, Mrs Wadsworth accepted the incident happened but denied they were underage.

She said: ‘No, they weren’t boys, they were men – I can tell by the way they looked, they were 17 or older.’

Mrs Wadsworth denies 12 charges of indecent assault against seven boys aged under 18 between September 1992 and August 1999.

Her husband denies ten charges of the same offence.

The pair also deny five counts of outraging public decency between July 1992 and June 1996.

The trial of the couple, from Broughton Astley, Leicestershire, continues.
