A “nasty bully” who bit a baby in the face after claiming it had headbutted him has avoided jail .

Babysitter Shane Stone was looking after the one-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, in September last year.

The child’s mother returned home and noticed a bruise on the tot’s right cheek which appeared to be a bite.

Stone, 23, from the Knowle West area in Bristol, told her the baby had headbutted him in the mouth and denied wrongdoing.

He was due to face trial later this month but then pleaded guilty to child cruelty.

Bristol crown court heard that he had moved away from the city in fear of his life after allegedly getting death threats following his guilty plea.

Judge Mark Horton gave him a five-month jail term, suspended for two years, and imposed a six-month night-time curfew.

The judge told Stone, who has a previous conviction for robbery: “Within you is a nasty bully. You took your anger out on this child for whatever reason.”

At a previous hearing Kenneth Bell, prosecuting, said Stone was left alone with the baby for some three-and-a-half hours by the boy’s mother.

Mr Bell said: “All seemed to be in order. When [the mother] returned she discovered that there was a curved mark around his right cheek.

“It appeared to be a bite mark. The mother asked him questions and they argued. Clearly it was a deliberate bite mark.”

Defending, Catherine Spedding said Stone was prone to anxiety and depression and smoked up to £50 worth of cannabis daily to self-medicate.

She said: ““He accepts what he did. He found it too difficult to talk about it. Clearly his shame and remorse was obvious.”

Stone was also ordered to carry out rehabilitation and pay a £115 victim surcharge.
