Stone Roses singer Ian Brown told a court how former TV weatherman Fred Talbot attempted a sex attack on his friend during a school trip in the 1970s.

Talbot, known for giving weather forecasts from a floating island on ITV’s This Morning, is accused of indecently assaulting boys when he was a biology teacher.

As part of the trial, Indie musician Ian Brown appeared as a witness and told the court about an incident involving his friend.

Brown recalled how Talbot had been his biology teacher and taught him for four years at a grammar school in the Manchester area.

He said: ‘I can’t remember where exactly we were in Scotland, I’ve been to over 50 countries but still don’t know where we came to on that trip.

‘We got on the school bus and drove to a hill which was covered in snow.

‘Mr Talbot decided who would go on these trips and you couldn’t just put your name down for them. It was all down to him who came.

‘When we were round the camp fire he said he was going to take one of us to the pub.

‘It was great, we were only 14 or 15 and someone was offering to take us to the pub, it was exciting but he took one of my friends.’

Brown continued: ‘I remember them driving off in the minibus and then coming back. We were on a hill in the middle of nowhere and it was pitch black.

‘Five minutes later Mr Talbot popped his head into the tent and said to the boy who had gone to the pub with him ‘I thought you were staying in my tent tonight’ and he went away.

‘The boy then left the tent and I saw him again 10 or 15 minutes later. I will always remember him diving back into the tent and landing on top of us.’

Brown told the court the boy alleged Talbot had attempted to commit a sex act on him before he ran away.

Brown also told the court of an alleged incident around 1978 where Talbot had shown boys on a trip a pornographic magazine.

He said the magazine featured naked men and claimed Talbot had watched to see who had been looking at the pictures.

Asked by defence lawyer Alan Gravelle why he hadn’t made allegations against Talbot at an earlier date, Brown said he knew Talbot had been starring on TV’s This Morning show but had ‘waited 40 years to speak to a policeman’.

He said: ‘Every time he appeared on television I told people the same story that I’m telling here today.

‘I must have told this story to hundreds and hundreds of people.’

Talbot is accused of carrying out the offences involving pupils aged 15-17 on trips in Scotland while he was employed as a school teacher.

He faces eight charges of indecent assault between January 1978 and November 1981 and one of lewd, indecent and libidinous behaviour in February 1978.

Six of the incidents are alleged to have happened on camping trips in Moffat, Dumfries and Galloway, and three on boating trips on the Caledonian Canal in Inverness.

The trial, before Sheriff Nikola Stewart, continues.
